Subject: Introduction and 8bit newsgroup natter

Hi,

 Now that there's a discussion re: 8bit newsgroup I thought I'd
better say hello. I first suggested the idea to Robert (Schmidt)
under the name comp.sys.acorn.classic. Both of us now feel the name
comp.sys.acorn.8bit is better. If you want to convince me that my
original suggestion was better then please go ahead... ;-)

I might well be preaching to the converted, as I guess most people
here would want to see support for their B, Electron, Master etc but
if you have any doubts that such a group would be beneficial to the
surviving 8bit Acorn community then I suggest you check out the other
8bit newsgroups to catch a group full of nostalgia. For example, I
recently spent a while lurking in the comp.sys.cbm group where I
heard about 3 Unix like operating systems and 1 Pre-emptive
multitasking OS (yup, you read that right!) that are in development
for the C64 and a 20Mhz accelerator. Who says 8bit computing is dead?
It's only dead if we neglect our machines. Exile demonstrated what
the Beeb could do with clever programming and there are still
opportunities for Beeb lovers to do things with their machines that
have never been tried before.

The other advantages are that it would clear a path for the other
Acorn newsgroups to concentrate on the 32bit range, gather all 8bit
users in one place instead of being swamped by many more "32bit"
posts, and having a place where we can discuss the various Beeb
emulators. I know that this list is also suitable for the above
points but many people don't get involved in mailing lists for fear
of drowning in a vast amount of email.

If anyone has any comments, then please address them to the list. If
I've repeated what other people (specifically Robert) then I
apologise.

Have fun,

Julian
