Subject: The beloved Beeb and disc drives

Hi,

So a quite eventful weekend at my place.  I decided to have a look inside
the 5 1/4, low and behold, I can stick on a Y adapter and put another disc
drive on.  Oooh yes please.

So, I wired this up

BBC B------------3 1/2 -------- 5 1/4
 (8271)             DS1           DS0

The bit about not using the twist in a PC floppy cable I managed to suss
out :-)

So, when I 
*DR.0
*CAT
everything as it should be

720K DD floppy in 3 1/2 drive
*FORMAT 1 80
light comes on, 
disc error

So, the question is, is the problem mit the 8271 controller ? and I must
upgrade to a 1770 / 1772, or should this configuration work with an 8271 ?
If so should I be using a specific DFS ?

I'd appreciate your thoughts / experiences on this matter.
