Subject: Re: XFER Source?

On the subject of XFER, I've had a problem with it running on Windows 98
that I solved after much head scratching.
In case anyone else is having the same problem it goes like this:

I ran XFER on the beeb, and it reported that it was waiting for a
connection.
I then ran XFER.exe on the PC, and it would appear to connect, but the beeb
would just sit at the waiting for connection screen.
If I then quit XFER on the PC and try to run it again, I get a runtime
error.

I could still set up the beeb for rs423 i/o, and use the terminal program on
my PC to control it, but *not* after I ran XFER on the PC.
After that the connection via terminal went screwy - weird extra characters
and such like.

I have now found a workaround for the problem.
It seems to be related to the XFER program on the PC changing the baud rate
of COM1:
XFER intially uses 1200 baud to check the connection and to tell the beeb
what baud rate to use, and both machines then switch to the baud rate set in
the ini file.
I'm not sure what goes wrong, but the beeb never receives the connect string
- all it gets is garbled nonsense.
To work around this, I just removed the lines from the XFER program on the
beeb that handle the receiving of the intial connection string, and just got
the beeb to default to 9600 baud.

After doing this it works the first time I run XFER on the PC - it still
gives me a runtime error if I exit and restart XFER on the PC, but a
re-start of windows fixes that.

If anyone else also has this problem, or a better solution than this, I'll
be glad to hear.
