Subject: BBC Model B +3.5" FDD + 8271 + DFS1.21

I'm trying upgrade my BBC model B with a 3.5" floppy disc drive (1.44 MB FDD
from a PC). The BBC has an 8271 interface and DFS 1.21 ROM installed (I
uderstand that the DFS 1.21 is a patched version of 1.20 - i.e. timings
adjusted to allow the use of a 3.5" FDD with the 8271 disc interface).

I'm using "2DD" type discs (with an unformatted capacity of 1.0MB). I don't
have the Acorn DFS utility disc that contains the disc format commands and
so I have been using my Acorn A3010 to format the disc - using the ADFS 640K
(L) format which I believe is compatible with the BBC disc format.

When I try any of the BBC disc commands (*CAT, *SAVE etc) the disc light
illuminates, there is some disc noise (head movement) and then the following
error message:

"Disc fault 18 at 00/00"

I have the drive connected to the BBC using the "untwisted" portion of a
34-way ribbon cable and the FDD is jumpered to be DS0.

What am I doing wrong? Any help is appreciated.

Chris.
