Subject: Re: Disk drive fault 04 - is there any hope?

In case anyone has any further ideas - an update on my attempt to
revive
my BBC Master:

I have dismantled the disk drives (dual 5.25" Viglen (Shugart SA465)
DS/DD)
and cleaned the heads but to no effect. I still get the errors 'Disc
fault 04
at :1 00/13' under DFS and 'Disc error 44 at :01/63002B' under ADFS.
Since I
get the same message (other than the drive number) when accessing either
side of either drive, I'm beginning to suspect the BBC rather than the
drives. I haven't got access to an alternative drive or BBC to test each
independently, so I wonder whether there is any other way of determining
where the fault lies. The only other problem I can see with the BBC so
far
is that the battery pack is flat, but I don't imagine that this could
cause
the problems I'm seeing.

Any ideas on further diagnostics would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Kevin Doyle
