Its literally just a checksum - i.e. the sum of all the bytes with carry
ignored. I assume the ADFS documentation was written before the generalised
term checksum grew to mean checksums, CRCs or just about anything. Certainly
ElectrEm's 'new' functionality (which I'm now having to replace due to
support for bit level data streams rather than just sector images with
implicit encoding) works fine like that.
