You might try looking at one thing called the "Flash" protocol and one
called the "MUGINS" protocol.  I may have "Flash" as text somewhere, I'll
upload it.  I know I have it as a printout.
 
The MUGINS protocol is at the core of the MUGINS system a friend and I
wrote in the mid-'80s for allowing multi-user gaming across multiple
machines.  The first incarnation was within a standard D&D-type game.  I
then adapted the game "Kingdom" off the BBC Welcome Tape to use it.
 
He he, let's invade jim's kingdom and capture his peasants... he he.
