IMAP would ease this situation - the inbox is stored on the server, so
the poor old Beeb would only have to deal with one message at a time. 

Regarding text-only mailers, I used to rather like Pine - undoubtedly
the easiest and quickest mail program I have ever used, and had some
features I still miss to this day in MS and Netscape products (notably
the "bounce" option).
