Hi,

Neither my Sony nor Academy machines have really been any use for
recording, especially the Sony one. With other machines I've owned
previously I'd always been able to get the correct volume level for
playing and recording all tapes quickly ascertained using the program at
the very start of the Welcome tape; both machines here got the playing
bit of the job done after this treatment, but hardly ever the recording.

Not really what you wanted to hear, that! Maybe some of the technical
boffins (like as what I'm not!) in this 'ere group can advise us both
further...
