All cards have firmware, but you'll have to get the tools to
the beeb somehow at least once, that's true.

One easy-ish way (which worked from the start, really) is to
copy the relevant tools to the MMC with GoMMCio.exe (on a PC),
then put the MMC back in the beeb and use *MMCTOOL to run the
tools.
