Couple of things to try - reseat all the socketed chips in the machine
in case it's an intermittant (heat-related) contact problem, and also
see if one of the RAM chips feels much hotter than the others at the
point after it's failed. Might be bad memory.

Try setting link 25 to the south position too; that *should* isolate the
top 16K of memory so the system appears as a 16K beeb, and might show up
results. 

I'm sure I had a machine with a failing video ULA years which gave this
problem too.
