Looking at the picture "Rom1", the notches on the chips should be
facing down.

I am always putting EPROMs in the wrong way up, you get the white
flash but it doesn't seem to do them any harm.  Did it yesterday with
the ROMBox without any trouble.

The damaged chips had their notches 'West'. I'm not so bothered about 
the chips because I have a programmer and a good supply of chips.
