I will have to try that out.  I know what the problem is, there is a
disc error on one of the drives which the MDFS detects during the
building of the free space maps, but it would be nice to read the
messages.

I'm not aware of any way to do so - the message could be a problem with
the disc, so spooling it to a file might be tricky.

You could try setting it to spool its messages to the serial printer and
connecting a computer to the serial port to log the messages. It could
then spool them onto a local disc.

This does mean having another machine on, though.
