Subject: Re: Making a 3.5" Beeb floppy drive

Hi,
For TEAC 3.5inch drives conversion to DD operation is mentioned in the
drives datasheet available at
http://www.teac.com/DSPD/catalog.htm#FD

Or on the following page.

http://www.teac.com/DSPD/support/floppy_drives/720k_emulation.htm

This has full visual instructions on how to carry out the modification to a
TEAC FD235HFA529 drive.

The drive select jumpers are hardwired by jumpers to DS1 this can be found
and removed and DS0 jumpered if required.

If you wish to use a cable with a twist instructions about how the cable
work are here :-

http://www.hardwarebook.net/cable/storage/floppy.html

Or you can purchase one cheaply say at your local friendly computer shop
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=15551

The power connector details are as follows
http://www.hardwarebook.net/connector/pc/smallpower.html

So you have to rig up to external supply or pick up the power from the BBC's
power connector.

An enclosure if required can be found say at a local Maplin store or other
supplier.

www.maplin.co.uk

Its best to pay a visit with your drive to pick the right enclosure. Some
enclosures claim they have the right internal measurements but their insides
are blocked with say groves or screw posts so you will have to be cut
through to make fit.

You can modify one of the following cables to give you a power cable for you
drive
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=32409&criteria=3.5%20power&doy
2m2

Or you could wire directly to a connector
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1319&criteria=Disk%20Drive%20Po
wer%20Connectors&doy=2m2

The BBC connector is a little hard to find these days you might be best
cannibalising an old one or
Checking out http://rswww.com/ RS components to see if there are any
suitable replacements.

Or check out www.vintagecomputer.co.uk to see if you get any suitable old
equipment or PSUs to modify.

Finally you might require an 8 way keyboard jumper :-
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=2387&TabID=1&source=17&WorldID
&doy=2m2

These are required to configure the BBC to operate with higher pulse
response drives and are fitted to the holes bottom right of the BBC
keyboard.

Hope this helps
Chris

Absolutely!

Who hijacked my posting? ;)

So to summarise:

If I were to take a Beeb 51/4" drive case, it's pretty easy to fit a
conventional 3.5" PC drive using a Maplins kit or similar. Sony's work well.

There is some issue with cable twist(?)

The drive automatically sets itself as disk 1, rather than disk 0, but that
can solved via jumper settings or the use of a soldering iron!

Anything else?

Aaron

Folks, if you're going to keep posting off-topic posts, at least change the
Subject field so that I don't spend time deciphering which of the posts are
actually relevant to it and not. You finished talking about 3.5" drives I
believe? I certainly am wanting to get a new one to be backwards compatible
with DD disks to transfer BBC stuff...

Alternatively use the 8BS message boards to really discuss off-topic where
it's accomodated. I've been accused of doing what you're doing just for
suggesting more dynamic support technologies like GoMMC and complaining of a
persons wasteful attitude against it's progress.

Thanking you for you co-operation in this respect. I would also like to
thank those of you who did stake an interest in dynamically supporting
GoMMC, I've not forgotten you, bear with me and will getting back to you
asap.

Fiaz.
