Even then it might be ok. Many years ago I dropped an AMX Super Art ROM 
while riding a bicycle at 20mph, therefore breaking some of the pins 
off. I soldered on replacement pins from some broken ICs and it still 
worked fine.

I also once put a WordWise Plus ROM in backwards, on removal it was 
almost too hot to touch. It still worked when put back in the right way 
round.

And only a couple of weeks ago I accidentally put a 6502 in backwards 
while trying to fix my Beeb with a scrolling fault. That still works too :-)
