Xfer4 (available from STH) runs fine on both XP and Vista. It also works
fine with USB to serial adapters.
The documentation that comes with Xfer4 doesn't explain how to run it very
well though. The readme talks about modifying the .ini file, but gives no
information about command line options. To run xfer4, extract the files to a
folder off the root of your drive (say c:\xfer4), then open a command prompt
(as administrator in Vista) and type:

c:\xfer4\xfer /?

to see a list of the command line options. To transfer the BBC xfer code
over to the BBC type:

c:\xfer4\xfer -c com4 -1

and follow the onscreen instructions. Change the com port number as
necessary to match your configuration. You only need to tranfer the BBC xfer
code over to the BBC once (assuming you save the code on the BBC). After
this all you need to do is run the xfer code on the BBC then type:

c:\xfer4\xfer -c com4

>From there, you should be able to transfer files to and from your BBC.

Ken.
