Yep; I worked that out.. afterwards, as I was trying to straighten
them out again - had a spare chasis-mount socket in the box which I
used.

Well that's what I thought.  Which is why I asked... I was quite
prepared to end up running another cable down, though it would have
been awkward, but no, it seems to actually work without the continuous
earth.   Plugged the RJ45-DIN cable into a standard econet T with a
plug-in terminator on one side and drop lead to the beeb on the other.
 I've not transferred huge amounts of data across it, just run a few
games, but it seemed to be OK..  No errors reported, anyway...
