I'm sure WinZip can create an archive with relative paths - there's
some oddity with how you create the archive as to whether the option
is there to make the paths relative or not. It's something like
whether you've clicked "New" from the WinZip window, or right-clicked
somewhere and created a new Zip file from the context menu.
Nonetheless it's still nasty and counter-intuitive.

Many Linuxes, particularly Ubuntu, come on a "Live CD" that you can
run without making any changes to the hard disk (or even without a
hard disk at all). They mount various parts of the system using RAM
disks, so they work best with plenty of RAM.
