A few years ago I set myself the task of writing a game from scratch Using
in built-in assembler: http://www.brahms.demon.co.uk/software/bbc/index.html

Admittedly this was on a Master so I had edit to help. At first it felt like
running through treacle with my shoe-laces tied together but after a while I
re-learnt skill such as remembering labels and keeping more than one thing
in my head at once. 

Still, I tend to cross-compile when possible
