I've just had a look at Wikipedia and it would seem that R
designations are IEC standards. All the other names are commonly-used
for historical reasons (e.g. AA) or proprietary names made up by
manufacturers (e.g. MN1500).

The IEC 'LR' designation refers to alkaline batteries.

Also looking at Wikipedia, it appeared that there was never a
standardised A or B battery. These terms were used for batteries used
in portable valve-based radio receivers (the letters referred to parts
of the circuits), so were not re-used to avoid confusion. However some
valve radios had a C battery, and this term was re-used.
