Mike

Thanks for this.

My line is quiet as a mouse!

Even the BT Engineer was impressed!

Andrew

Well, exactly. For a tenner it has to be worth a go. And the DGTeam
firmware is very good, you can strike your own balance between sync
speed and data integrity (though the default has been fine for me.
Experimenting hasn't gained me anything.)

Mine still syncs at 8032kbps and doesn't ever budge. WAN uptime is 97
hours at the mo, I've seen 600+.

Noise margin varies very little - order of 11.1 to 11.3 dB. Very
surprising given that I'm on the end of an approx 50m overhead drop from
the pole with loads of streetlights nearby. Line length is ~2.5km.

Another router that is highly regarded for making the best of poor lines
is the 2Wire something-or-other, can't remember the exact model, but can
look for it if you like.

Rob's idea of making a direct connection to the line without anything in
between, just for testing, is a good one, even if BT wouldn't approve.

There are some excellent troubleshooting resources@...,
it'd be well worth settling down with a cuppa and reading the various
guides.

If there is a fault with your line (dial 17070 and select the quiet line
test. Any audible noise is grounds for calling BT) it's fatal to
mention ADSL. Openwoe will bounce you straight back to your ISP. You
have to be persistent about it being a voice call problem before they
will take action. It's probably only a crappy joint somewhere between
the street pole and your house that their line monkeys haven't yet
found.

Good luck
M.
