Without a battery, your configuration memory will tend to
become scrambled every time you switch off, although it
may 'hold' for a short while due to the capacitance on
the motherboard. As remarked by Peter, reset the memory
by holding R while switching on. In theory, you'll have
to do that every time you switch on, until you reconnect
the battery.
