If it was a small 2-leaded 'blob', it was probably a tantalum capacitor 
across the power rails. One of tehir failure modes is to go short circuit, 
and since the power supply in the MDFS is quite 'beefy', they can then 
explode or burn away.

If it is such a thing, then it's non critical, and could be replaced with a 
small electrolytic.  A quick check with an Ohm meter will let you know if it 
was across the 5V rail.
