Subject: Philips VP415,

Grr, sent this to one person instead of the list yesterday.

Ok, well, i can get the check mode screen up but it just shows the 3 white
blocks, no fault codes.

So, i tried diagnostics mode.

Initial fault code was 99 , "time out during start up diagnostics"

I ejected the disc manually using the hole in the back.
The fault code changed to 14, "Active 0-RPM without a LV Disc at start up"

After that i power cycled it into normal mode and the eject button opened
the tray when pressed.
I put the disc back in, closed the tray partly and it closed it the rest of
the way.
Standby flashed for maybe 10 seconds and then stayed on with a beep.
Then it short beeps about every 20 seconds.
Only standby led on.
If i press play on the remote then standby goes out and eject flashes along
with the short beeps every 20 seconds or so.
But the disc doesn't eject.

Check mode again shows no codes.
Diagnostic mode back to code 99

Time to do a lot more reading of the manual.

Some of the little rubber dots that the disc sits on in the tray are missing
and whatever is around the lens seems to have gone mouldy but otherwise
looks ok so far.

I've just ordered a laserdisc off ebay as i don't want to risk scratching
the National disc while fault finding.

Many thanks,

Jim

Yup... they're fun... ;)

I made some short cables for mine with appropriate connectors at either end
so that they could be worked on out of the chassis. Were there official
service riser cards for them?

Jim: I'd check the eject mechanism first, I would have thought that to be
pretty fundamental to operation and independent of reading (i.e. you should
be able to eject a disc even with other faults present). I seem to recall a
few rubber bumpers and glued-on pads which can cause issues due to age, so
getting the disc out and assessing the "mechanical" side of things first is
probably a good idea.

cheers

Jules
