Lots of addons out there to bring the Beeb up to date...
On my desk I've got one Master with a GoMMC, a Raspberry Pi running as a
universal co-pro via an internal tube adapter, and (occasionally) a
Micro-SD card on the user-port thanks to a 99p ebay module. Another Master
has a DataCentre in it, and a choice of a traditional 6502 or Sprow's ARM7
co-pros available. Both currently sharing a lovely bright pink LCD TV via
SCART.
One useful and cheap thing I did find is a battery backed SRAM chip - slots
directly into anywhere you can stick a regular 16K or 32K SRAM, but retains
contents after power-off. And it really is RAM... They work in Master
Cartridges, too (but you need to pick one where the socket is above the
case, or leave the Master's lid off, as they are taller than a standard
chip.) Just over ?2 from china... I've got a pile if anyone want's one,
but UK postage is a bugger due to size so easier going direct if you can
wait...
All machines are Econeted through to the A5000 sat in a rack in the loft,
which is also on the house Ethernet, allowing me to access it from BeebEm
(And the RiscPC, when I have it set up.) I've considered getting Sprow's
Master Ethernet module, but as it would mean losing Econet, it's a bit of
an issue, as I've not yet managed to persuade the A5000 to talk SMB. It's
a pity it doesn't support AUN...!
I've not yet found a need for going directly HDMI - RBG via SCART uses
digital like signals, and is as perfect a signal as I have seen. I do have
a Model B with the S-Video output "mod", but in the end found I didn't use
it much. I've also got one of those SCART to HDMI adapters; it was an old
Maplin one I think, but, as with many out there, it added just a bit too
much lag to be comfortable when I tried using it on the TV downstairs on a
games console.
Community wise, I watch and contribute to the Facebook group most days
lately, (and the Teletext group) but that's all I actually use Facebook
for. I *never* look at the timeline thing, it's too full of crap, and I
certainly don't post my life on there like some people seem to. I do use
twitter, but it's even more ephemeral than Facebook - both are equally hard
to find anything on that happened more than a few days before. If I have
anything particularly worthwhile to share, I might stick it on my very
infrequently updated blog. Stardot does indeed look to be where a lot of
the more technical side of things is happening, but that is not somewhere I
frequent due to a past disagreement. (though I will read it, if a search
result points me there!)
This list does seem to have become very quiet, but I would certainly not
like to see it go!
