I OUTLINE I-A Description EPSON dot matrix LCD modules, EA-Y series, consist of a newly developed high-contrast, wide-viewing angle TN-FEM liquid crystal display, C-MOS LCD driver/controller LSI. The combination of LCD and semiconductor technology realized high reliability and low power consumption of EA-Y series. All models of EA-Y series have CHARACTER GENERATOR and DISPLAY DATA RAM on board and all display functions are controlled by the instructions, which saves the apacity of MPU and the peripheral circuits. Also 8 bit data bus system of EA-Y series makes easy interface with most MPUs. Wide variations (16 to 320 character display) of EA-Y series offer numerous applications I-B Features -Character of 6 x 7 dot matrix font with cursor -Wide variety of display formats (16 to 320 characters) -Single '+5v' power supply -Low power consumption -Easy 'Microprocessor' interface -C-MOS/TTL compatible signal level -Built-in RAM for display data storage/refresh -CHARACTER GENERATOR (based on ASCII code) -Multiple instruction sets (based on 13 instructions) -High contrast/Wide viewing angle -Light weight/Compact construction -Easy installation I-D Construction 1) An LCD module of EA-Y series is mainly composed of X-unit (upper PCB) and Y-unit (lower PCB). X-unit includes Dot Matrix LCD panel and multiple column (segment) driver LSIs. Y-unit includes power supply circuit and one more controller LSIs which have row (common) driver, Character Generator and display Data RAM. 2) EA-Y series are designed to function by a single +5V power supply as the power source for driving the LCD is generated in the on-board power circuit. 3) The contrast and the viewing angle of the LCD panel depends on the ambient temperature and the supplied voltage of the LCD. The modules of EA-Y series have the contrast adjusting terminals so that the contrast and the viewing angle can be adjusted to be the best condition in any circumstances guaranteed in the Absolute Maximum Ratings by connecting an adequate potentiometer between the terminal VR1 and VR2. 4) All display functions concerning display data, address data and cursor functions are controlled by the 13 basic instructions input through 8 bit data bus. 5) The controller, LSI includes DISPLAY DATA RAM and CHARACTER GENERATOR (based on ASCII Code). All that is required to display information is to write 8 bit data from the MPU into the DATA RAM. 6) Two kinds of address set methods are possible. One is direct address set method, another is automatic increment/decrement method. 7) The underline cursor or the all dot blinking (one character) cursor is selectable for the cursor format. The cursor has the functions of 'CURSOR AT HOME' and 'CURSOR RETURN' besides 1 Hz blinking of the underline cursor. 8) Moreover, the module has various functions like Reset whole system, Clear all data (Space code input), Display ON/OFF, Display supress (this function is only for a single line display).
