ah, right, i understand fully now. yes, i can see how that will probably be
faster than my method, whether it's significantly faster is another question. 
unfortunately the effort for me to redo it this way is enormous so i will
probably give it a miss. besides the significant time-eater is the CRTC and
the mac toolbox routine to dump a bit-image to the screen. 

has anyone played 'space cadet'? it uses the so-called mode8 in AUG. most
interesting.

i'm avoiding the task of getting the DFNS to work. instead i'll just implement
a very fast random access cassette filing system!
