Mike,

You're a genius.  I changed that resistor (it was open circuit) and the
monitor now works fine.  The nearest resistor I could get at the local
shop was a 180k carbon one.  Will it be OK to leave that one in?

The only minor problem I now have is that the display is a bit high.  I
twiddled the pot marked 'height', but that just squashes it, rather than
moving it down.  Is there a pot for moving the display down the screen a
bit, keeping the same height?
