I have an AT controller which reads BBC discs fine. The readme file
which comes with a disc utility program called FDC states that the
floppy controller needs two crystals, a 16Mhz and a 9.6Mhz, in order to
be able to read single density. Mine has this and can read BBC discs
fine, whereas the units which have one 24Mhz crystal I have been unable
to get to work.
