Subject: Can U Help? (grovel)

Hi there,

I've got two slightly duff Microvitec Cub monitors, neither works. They are
both Model 1431MS.

I was hoping that you might be able to help me or would know someone that
might be able to help me.

The first one...

It worked fine until one day one of the fuses inside the monitor blew (the
secone one in from the left), changing this for a new fuse didn't help, it
just blew again. The monitor gets put in a loft for a few years...

The main board in the first one is yellow; the underside has a few brown
patches but no bad corrosion that I can see. I have checked for and
resoldered a few dry joints. There was a broken track which I have fixed by
soldering a short piece of wire over the broken bit.

I've just tried a new fuse and when I turned the monitor on, the bottom bit
of a component labelled 'T432' glowed orange and then the same fuse blew.

'T432' is located on the front right hand side of the monitor next to two
connectors that connect to the LED and something else. On the board next to
the component it says 'TH1'.

Can anyone help? Should I change the component for a new one (what is it?)
and/or do something else?

The secone one...

The second one has got a blue board inside it, I bought this one (for £25)
with a job lot of computers from a rather disreputable shop. I've never
seen it work so it too was dumped in the loft.

I plugged it in, switched it on and nothing happened.

Inside was a *lot* of dust, most of which I brushed and hoovered out, there
doesn't seem to be any problems corrosion/dry joints on the main board.

I plugged it in again and the red LED lit up and there was the usual noise
that CUBs make when they switch on. Aside from that, nothing.

This one has got a lot of corrosion on the joints on the board which is
connected to the CRT. I've resoldered (ish) the corroded joints. (By
resoldering I mean that I melted the solder that was there, lots of brown
stuff oozed from under the solder and I added some new solder to the stuff
already there. I don't, sadly, have a desoldering tool. By corrosion I
mean that there is brown stuff that looks a bit like rust around the solder
joints.)

Again I plugged it in and the same thing as last time happened. Oh, and I
adjusted the brightness, both on the board and using the knob on the
monitor, just in case. The screen just doesn't seem to do anything, I just
get the usual noise when I turn it on and off. I don't think that there is
anything happening with the screen itself, it doesn't light up a bit (like
they do) and there's no static when I turn it off, the usual stuff.

Can anyone help? Should I properly desolder the nasty joints on the board
(anything else I need to do to get rid of the corrosion), or should I
replace the tube or should I do something else?

I've tried local monitor/TV places but they all don't want to have anything
to do with these monitors. Some have even *pretended* to take a look at
them before announcing them both completely dead and unrepairable. I
contacted Green Acre Services but it would cost me over £100 to get these
monitors fixed (£48 pounds for each repair plus postage/insurance/etc).
(Green Acre promised me to repair or replace the monitors.)

I don't know very much about electronics or monitors so I'm hoping that
someone out there will be able to help me. My tools are simple and my cash
is limited. I have some experience with electronics and I am aware of some
of the 'common sense' things when messing with monitors.

If you can't help but know someone who might be able to then I'd love to get
in contact with them.

Thanks and appreciation in advance.
