In fact I just received a mail - purely by coincidence descriping this:

I'm slowly percervering (sp!) with my newly adopted BBC B'. Its got the
Solidisk DFS installed - which works very well. Here's a hint for people who
have adopted old disk drives that seem to work but sound very rough.

1) Disconnect the drive from the machine totally,
2) Put a small pad of cotton wool to cover the heads.
3) Sparingly spray a small amount of silicon spray over the mechanism -
especially the part that moves the heads back and forth.
4) Leave for about 10 mins.
5) Remove the cotton wool and clean the heads, either with cleaning fluid on
a cotton bud or with a non-abrasive cleaning disk.

Hey presto - one rejuvanted BBC 5.25 disk drive - or twin in my case !
----end of snip ----
