I wrote a lengthy article discussing this. It can be downloaded from the BBC

There is a table at the end that lists many many drives up to the 720k
variation.
I have a master list here on my hard drive that also contains the 1.2 &
1.4MB drives.

The criteria for the 1.4MB High density drives to work on a BBC is that it
must be able to switch to double density. Usually this is automatic when you
insert a DD disk.
