Sounds like the Constrictor mission.  Go back to the planet where the
message appeared and dock at the station. Press F6 for the data on the
planet.  Replacing the usual silly "This planet is inhabited by green
slugs..." should be the mission text, IIRC.  Look here at each planet
you visit for a clue as to how to complete the mission.

I also recall there are other "special" messages which appear, for
example when you dock at one of the planets mentioned in the novella
which came with the game.
