How could *any* Beeb enthusiast underestimate this, when they've seen
Elite (and also Exile)?

And how could any such enthusiast believe that he can improve so much
more upon Bell, Braben and Duggan's work?

You've been fooled by the syndrome that software (especially games) tend
to grow during development to consume available resources.

If a program is larger on an 8086 platform compared to 6502, possible
reasons are either:

1. sloppy programming/optimization (because more resources are
   available), or
2. more features (because more resources are available)

... or both.
