I used to use standard PC 3 1/2" drives happily - it's necessary to set a
jumper for drive 0/1 (most drives have the solder pads if not the actual
jumpers). Power can be taken from the BBC or (as I used to) from a
separate power supply (I used to use 2A linear regulators withlots of
smoothing capacitors which gave no problems at all - it's worth
considering the case for the drives - I lots a disk interface on an
electron due to a IMHO very badly designed power input on a disc drive
case which caused 15VAC to go down the data ground).

Not used many 5 1/4" drives, but ISTR these are more or less the same in
terms of requiring a jumper for drive0/1 selection.

HTH,

Frank
