I'm sorry but this just isn't the case.  When they were squeezing games
into Model B's in the early 80s they didn't have the performance or memory
to do everything through the OS or according to the specs.

It is a fine view to take now where we have tons of processing power and
RAM but the reality of the 1980's meant that they had to access hardware
directly.
