Many thanks to everyone who sent me code on this, it is good to see so
many people still have the skills!

I managed to eventually read the file using a modified version of the
code Chris Richardson & Tom Seddon sent me. After stripping the control
codes I still didn't get the text I was after - but realised the RS232
input was using ASCII 128+ to display characters coming in, and <128 to
display characters typed. A quick modification gave me a 10 line BASIC
program that displays the file in (virtually) all its former glory.
