No doubt, you're describing Frenzy from Micropower!
Terribly addicitve game - I still play it once in a while.
And, yes, it was released on the BBC. 
Used to be one of my favourites games.

Additional info: the area in which the snake(s) move is blue initially, and
turned pink or red after it was closed off.
