No, no, no.
 
Don't use a Beeb modem, that would only give you 75/1200.  Use any old
off-the-shelf bog-standard modem modem.
 
My Beeb currently uses a US Robotics 14400, with the serial port speed set
to 19200, giving a line throughput of about 12000 with no errors.
