A popular eprom programmer in BBC days was the Ground Control Uviprom
programmer. This was sold in kit form or as an unboxed board, and it
was common for people to build the kit into their own enclosures, so it
could appear in a bewildering variety of forms.

It plugged into the user port and cane with a ROM written by Solidisk
with *TEST, *BLOW, *COMP etc. commands for testing, burning and
comparing EPROMs.

If you post up the URL of a picture of the insides, I can tell you
whether it's the Ground Control kit or not (I have one here with the
ROMS for it.)
