I've fixed two dud BBC power supplies. The first had a cracked cable where
the cable enters the case of the machine - all I had to do was shorten the
cable a bit to remove the damaged section.

Another power supply failed recently when a capacitor failed. It was pretty
obvious what had gone wrong on account of the really horrible oily sweet
smell that came off the leaked electrolyte. It was no problem to buy an
identical capacitor from Farnell and replace the failed one.

So to summarise I would say have a look inside - you'll probably be able to
fix it. I don't know very much about electronics yet I was successful twice!
However I should stress the safety angle - the PSU contains mains voltages
so think carefully before doing anything.
