Indeed the aim is not to limit access to just emulators (which will tend to
have much more speedy and reliable network connections) if possible. There
are going to be many more issues with making something normal machines can
use which doesn't require a hardware addon, specifically with respect to
being able to communicate the machine state, but that is another matter.

So, I will exactly as you suggest, incorporate a 'start of header' magic
value (is one byte enough?) and a CRC into the redraft, and reconsider the
issue of 'resend's.

Just out of interest, what methods are available to a real BBC user to
connect to a network? Just modems and econet presumably? Is there any PPP
software for dialing up normal ISPs? And are econet<->tcp/ip bridges popular
or easily found?

And while I'm here, does anyone have a publically accessible server that
could be used for testing? I could try to knock up some UNIX based server
software . . .
