This sounds very obvious, but is the drive set to the right number of
tracks?
Some drives (mine at least) seem to 'chug' slightly when you flick the
40/80 switch. I mention this because...
It could be that the 40/80 switch has become disconnected from the drive
board, so isn't switching the drive over). In some drives it is just
attached with wires soldered onto the IC legs, a wire may of come off
somewhere.
