Tool of the century IMO is the Electric desoldering tool.
It's a desoldering pump with an electrically heated tip.
Try it once, and you'll never go back to the separate iron and
desoldering pump.
Rapid electronics sell them for 16.70 ukp. They're on 01206 751166.

If you don't mid destroying the motherboard, there's always the 'blow
torch from behind' method of chip removal, but do it outdoors !
