Hi,
Do you wish to link your BBC to a classic type MAC PowerPC or
old type Quadra or classic or the newer G3 or G4 Macs?
The new Macs now use USB so you'll need one of those USB to
serial converters and appropriate driver. The only MAC supporting the
old ports is the Blue and white G3 and this was rather buggy and not
fully supported.
The Maplin lead works with the old MACS but you'll need a null
modem adapter as the pins are wired straight through. Then you'll need
software i.e. Xmodem or Kermit or a dedicated util.

Do Macs still have those silly mini din connectors for modem (aka
serial) ports? or have they started using 9D's yet? I built a Mac lead
once in the absence of a network to transfer 1Gbyte of data at 56k,which
was fun.
If you need the mini DIN,Maplin sell these - but note that the solder
side of the pins aren't solder buckets so you'll need a lot of patience.

One notch is fine, there are just two notches on the socket end so you
can put the plug in either way round and waste lots of time working out
why the serial link doesn't work!
