Subject: Re: Using 1.44Mb HD Floppy drives with a Master 128
Hi,
I suspect it either might be the jumper settings bottom right of
the BBC B keyboard are not set for a faster access drive. Maplin sell a
little switches which you can solder into the pins if they are empty on
your machine. QY70M Slimline 8W DIL Sw £1.49.
It could be your High Density Disks or your drives are not very
forgiving. For experience I tend to get the best result from TEAC floppy
drives as they are renown for following the standards.
Also BBC B don't like very long cables and if your using a
staight cable with no twist your drive will be set up as drive 1 not
drive 0. There might be a little slide switch on one side of your drive.
You might have to remove some shielding.
Find attached the 40 80 Switcher unit which was converted from
an old Atari ST Degas elite format from the Atari Hack website.
Thanks
Chris

Chris,
Thank you so much. You have clearly gone to a lot of trouble to find
out this information.
Based on what you have given me, it would seem that I'm using the type
(2) 3.5" drive. Namely the 'Standard High Density' which formats disks
at 1.44Mb and 720Kb.
I'll read your attached pin definition document very carefully tonight.
I should point out, however, that the drives I'm using are
'Bog-Standard' Mitsumi ones of the type you get in PC's. They cost
about £7 if you buy them. They feature no jumpers whatsoever (at
least
none accessible from outside the casing) so I'm left with very little to
play with. I'll also try covering the hole in the floppy disk and see
if that improves matters.
The only thing confusing me a little is that Sprow makes it all seem so
easy, and other people are clearly enjoying success with using PC 3.5"
FD drives on their Beebs. What on earth am I doing wrong?
At least one of the Master 128's I'm trying it on is bog standard i.e.
with ADFS and 1770 DFS.
Austin.
