This may not be relevant, but I remember seeing that
sort of behaviour on a PC. It's usually because the
drive cable is in back to front, or the drive select
is wrong. Have you tried:

1) using a cable without a twist?
2) Plugging the drive connector in the other way? (I
guess there may be a danger of damaging the
drive/controller if you do this)
