I'd personally prefer disc images and I'm sure there are utilities for most
OS's that can extract the files. Two formats would be better, perhaps disc
images as one and files with .inf in a zip archive as another.

Not usually no, but it's easy enough to attach one to a Risc PC. I've got
one in the second slice.
