Maybe it's a problem with your disk.  Have you tried
writing a large file to the disk using basic?
I haven't used xfer for a while, but I do remember
that is seems to load about 4k of data into a buffer
before writing it to disk.  I had similar problems in
the past - I think it was due to incorrectly formatted
disks.

Also, I've just had a quick look at the xfer code. In
xfer3, the buffer size if 4000 bytes.  In xfer4 it's
4096 bytes.
