I had exactly the same problem with early versions of my BBC emulator. The fix 
was to set the 8271 status byte correctly. I recall there was a discussion 
about this on this list towards the end of 2000 so it should be in the 
archives. Alternatively, I can send my 8271 emulation code to whoever wants to 
correct BeebEms 8271 code.
